University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB), Department of Biosafety Training Program Overview: The Department of Biosafety Training Program is an international resource providing unique theoretical training, individualized hands-on training and assessments to ensure the preparedness of professionals working in biosafety level 2 through level 4 laboratories.

The UTMB Department of Biosafety is training the next generation of laboratory workers, medical technicians, public health professionals, animal care staff, and biosafety professionals for containment facilities of today and the future within the region, country and around the world.

With the proliferation of new biocontainment facilities around the world, including BSL3 and BSL4 laboratories, we will provide essential biosafety training and consultation to biocontainment facilities, helping ensure safe and secure operations. Since 2005 UTMB Biosafety has provided training to individuals from 30 States and 44 Countries.

Course description: This course will provide trainees with the principles of biosafety, best lab practices, a basic knowledge and understanding of laboratory equipment, and incident response procedures to conduct research successfully and safely in a BSL3 laboratory. Emphasis will be on development of competencies in fundamental biosafety and laboratory techniques. 

Course objective: The objective of this course is to provide trainees with a foundation based on the principles of biosafety, identification of risks, practices, and techniques to work safely in a BSL3 laborat.
